Nagarkot hiking is for those who wish to stretch their legs and enjoy there are several pleasant strolls around the rural countryside. This is most popular hill station very close to the eastern side of Kathmandu. We start our hike, crossing through the terraced fields, dense Tamang traditional village, with typical countryside houses painted with locally found Ocher.

Nagarkot is situated at 2195 m / 7200ft is a quiet and scenic hilltop about 32 km from Kathmandu, very popular as a Mountain Viewpoint. One can see the panorama of the Himalayas ranging from the Dhaulagiri in the west to Kanchenjunga in the east including Mt Everest (you will see Mt Everest only as a dot on the horizon but with a binocular, you can have a good view of it).

The other ranges you will see are the Langtang, Dorje Lakpa and the Gaurishankar ranges, the Everest which will be your memorable experience. The sunrise and sunset on the Himalayas seen from this hill could be a lifetime memory for you. You pass the uphill trail through scattered villages, forests, and farmlands and reach Nagarkot early afternoon.

The village of Nagarkot is on the edge of the valley and offers superb views of the mountains as well as Kathmandu valley. The most popular walk leads down from Nagarkot along a ridge to the temple of ChanguNarayan- with views of Sankhu village to the right and Bhaktapur to the left. Changunarayan is Nepal oldest living monument dating back to the 5th century. It is a UNESCO world heritage site. The Sankhu to Nagarkot hiking starts at the Newar village of Sankhu after the drive of about 1-1.5 hrs from Kathmandu. The small and pleasant village of Sankhu is a major pilgrimage site with the temple of Bajrajogini. Now you hike from Sankhu to Nagarkot and it takes about three and a half hours. It is a bit difficult climbing the hills but one can do it. You can spend your time amidst the natural surroundings of Nagarkot during hiking.
